These courses provide students with the opportunity to earn a high school elective credit as well as college credit. Course offerings at high schools will vary according to student interest. Students in this program pay no college application fee or tuition and do not have to purchase textbooks. The general prerequisites for the students to take a dual enrollment class are: Be in the 11th or 12th grade Dual enrollment courses are counted as credit toward the total credits needed for graduation. Dual enrollment courses may substitute for graduation requirements in subject areas. With permission from the high school principal, students who meet the above criteria may take specified dual enrollment courses on the St. Petersburg College campus as part of their regular high school schedule for up to half of the school day. Under these circumstances, students may enroll only in dual enrollment course that are included in the Pinellas County Schools articulation agreement with the college. Composition 1 This course is designed to develop composition skills. It emphasizes the development of the multi-paragraph essay and includes practice in the selection, restriction, organization, and development of topics. It also offers the student opportunities to improve abilities with sentence structure, diction, and mechanics. Selected writing samples are examined as models of form and as sources of ideas for the student’s own writing. Conferences provide individual instruction. This course partially satisfies the SBE 6A-10.030 writing requirements outlined in the SPC general education requirements. |
Composition 2 This course builds upon the skills developed in Composition 1. It provides further instruction in the planning, organizing and writing of essays. It stresses methods of library research and emphasizes writing of the research paper and the paper of literary interpretation. The reading includes selections from at least two forms of literature. Conferences provide individualized instruction. |
Ancient Greek Mythology The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with the world of mythological gods and heroes of the ancient Greeks. Literature, art, and archeology will be examined as well as lifestyle ideas of the ancient Greek civilization. (This course will not count toward Bright Futures) |
