FAMILY CONSUMER SCIENCE

Child Development
Grade Level: 9-12 Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: None - 1/2 Credit

This course is designed to help the student understand children. Each student will identify the basic human needs, human development, the birthing process, nurturing, developmental and guidance skills necessary for raising a child. The student will be able to identify laws and locate resources available which protect the welfare of a child. This course also examines the significant role communication plays in a parent/child relationship. Strongly recommended for students planning to take Early Childhood education. Students have the opportunity to take home a computer baby for a weekend.

Foods 1
Grade Level: 9-12 Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: None - 1/2 Credit

There is a definite relationship between the food we eat and our health. This course will help students understand this relationship and practice good choices based upon the latest scientific information. The class will provide for practical experience in selection, preparation, service and storage of foods. Students will participate in numerous kitchen activities where practical skills will be taught and emphasized. Preparing, eating, and cleaning up included.

Foods 2
Grade Level: 9-12 Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: Foods 1 - 1/2 Credit

Instruction and learning activities are provided in a foods lab using hands-on experiences with the tools, equipment, and materials appropriate to the course content and in accordance with current practices. International foods are studied and prepared.

Sewing 1
Grade Level: 9-12 Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: None - 1/2 Credit

Students are to learn how to sew using a pattern to make an article of clothing and other items for the home. They will learn to care for and maintain a sewing machine. They will learn about identifying, using and caring for fabric. They will learn of opportunities to use sewing for making money. They will learn about jobs that use sewing skills. Students will use computerized sewing machines, sergers, and embroidery machines. Students will need to purchase supplies for their projects.

Design Services Core
Grade Level 9-12 Length 1 year
Prerequisite None - 1 Credit

This course is designed to develop competencies in the areas of the interior design/decorating industry OR fashion design industry. It includes essential basic skills for working in design services, basic principles of design, textile characteristics and care, employability skills, safe use of tools and equipment and selection of appropriate materials.

Principles of Fashion Design
Grade Level 9-12 Length 1 Year
Prerequisite : Design Services Core - 1 Credit

This course is designed to further develop competencies in the area of fashion design services. It includes employment in fashion design services, basic skills essential to working in this industry, employability skills, elements and principles of design, the terminology of the apparel industry, garment construction skills, sales techniques, and entrepreneurship. Students will need to purchase materIals for projects.

Principles of Interior Design
Grade Level 9-12 Length 1 Year
Prerequisite : Design Services Core - 1 Credit

This course is designed to further development in the areas of interior design services, basic skills essential to working in the industry, employability skills, sale techniques and entrepreneurship. Students will need to purchase materials for projects.

Pattern Design Techniques
Grade Level 11-12 Length 1 Year
Prerequisite : Design Services Core and Principles of Fashion Design - 1 Credit

This course is designed to further develop the competencies in the area of fashion design services, garment construction skills including pattern making, sketching and illustration, and understanding the history and culture of fashion. Students will need to purchase materials for projects.
