SAT Prep The purpose of this course is to provide instruction and practice in preparation for the SAT for college admission. The verbal portion of the exam which is two thirds of the test is stressed in this class. Depending on enrollment, instruction in the math section of the test may be as independent study. Students are required to purchase the textbook. African American Literature This course will focus on the history and development of African American Literature during the past 200 years. Students will also read, discuss and compare different authors and their writings, as well as, create short pieces of their own. Students are encouraged to participate in group research projects and acitivites throughout the course. Speech 1 The purpose of this course is to develop oral communication skills in formal and informal speaking situations. Emphasis is placed on using public speaking skills, listening skills, and group discussion techniques. Students will develop speeches appropriate for specific purposes and will evaluate speeches and speaking techniques. Debate 1 The purpose of this course is to develop debate skills through the study of fundamental concepts of argumentation and problem solving and through the presentation of informative, persuasive, and argumentative speeches. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking and research skills. Students will participate in debate activities. Debate 2(3) Debate 4Q This course improves argumentation and debate skills. Emphasis is placed on greater proficiency in critical thinking and research skills. Students will evaluate debates and debate techniques, and they will participate in various kinds of debate activities. Creative Writing 1 & 2 The purpose of this course is to provide instruction in basic aspects of journalism and creative literature. Emphasis is placed on the writing process to produce publishable pieces in various literary forms. |
Mass Media 1 This course provides study of various types of mass media by analyzing the purposes, content, and techniques of media productions. Students will demonstrate awareness of the need and impact of various types of programming and ethics and responsibilities in the media field.. An application must be completed and permission of the instructor must be obtained. Students must provide two mini DV tapes for projects in this course. Mass Media 2-4 The purpose of this course is to produce, evaluate, and analyze a variety of original mass media projects. Students will develop an awareness of the ethics and responsibilities of producing media. Students are required to spend time outside of regular school hours covering newsworthy events. An application and audition are required and permission from the instructor must be obtained. Journalism 1 This course will enable students to develop skills in the production of print journalism, such as writing news stories using Associated Press style, learning elements of photojournalism and learning the basics of layout and design using InDesign and Adobe Photoshop. The class will also explore the history of and ethical issues in journalism, as well as possible careers in the journalism field. Students who take this course will be well-equipped to participate on the school newspaper or yearbook staff. The purpose of this course is to develop writing skills through practice in journalistic writing. Emphasis is placed on gathering information, writing articles, and exploring career opportunities in journalism. Students prepare materials for publication. Q Journalism 3 -

(Newspaper or Yearbook) The purpose of this course is to refine writing and production skills related to journalistic media. Emphasis is placed on writing, graphic design, and/or photographic techniques. Students practice managerial skills in journalistic contexts. |
