Music courses may require mandatory after-school rehearsals and performances. Outside performances are part of the assignments in the music classes.

Band I This course provides students with the opportunity to develop technical skills on band instruments in an ensemble setting. The content develops performance techniques and reading musical notation. Band 2 This course is designed to extend musicianship skills and technical skills through performance in instrumental ensembles. The content includes the production of characteristic tone, and the development of basic band performance techniques, musical literacy, and music appreciation. Band 3 This course provides students with instruction in development of musicianship and technical skills through the study of varied band literature. Content will include: interpreting medium level band music; establishing appropriate tone production and performance techniques; identifying simple musical form and various styles; and evaluating musical performance as a participant and listener. Band 4 The purpose of this course is to provide students with in-depth instruction in musicianship and technical skills through the study of varied band literature. The content will include interpreting medium/difficult level band literature, refining tone production and performance techniques, demonstrating and understanding of musical form, and evaluating musical performance as a participant and as a listener. Q Band 5 This course enables the student to develop independent musicianship, performance techniques and aesthetic awareness through performance of varied band literature. The student will demonstrate ability to interpret and perform difficult musical notation at sight and formulate critical evaluations as a participant and as a listener.

Q Band 6 This course is designed to foster internalization of independence in musicianship, techniques, and aesthetic awareness through the performance of varied band literature. The student will demonstrate awareness and application of appropriate ensemble Band 4 performance techniques and demonstrate independent ability to interpret and perform difficult musical notation at sight. The purpose of this course is to develop fundamental performance techniques and the interpretation of musical notation. The student will display knowledge of the care of the instrument, demonstrate a characteristic tone on the instrument of choice and develop evaluative listening skills. Instrumental Techniques 4 receives honor quality points. Guitar 1-4 This course is designed to offer introductory experiences on the guitar in performance skills and interpretation of simple notation. The students will develop the ability to perform chords and melodies using correct hand position, play chords and melodies in selected keys and sight read music. Students must provide their own guitar. Orchestra 1(2)(3) This course enables students to develop music skills, tone production and performance techniques on orchestral instruments. The content includes knowledge of rhythm and meter, vocabulary, tone production, music literacy and style. This course will be run in conjunction with the Advanced Band course. |
Keyboard (Piano) 1-3 This course will provide students with experiences on the keyboard in performance skills and interpretation of notation. Content includes music reading, chords, scales, vocabulary, and keyboard literature in a variety of meters, styles and keys. Chorus 1 The purpose of this course is to develop basic vocal techniques and musicianship skills through the study of varied choral literature. The content will include fundamental skills in vocal tone production, choral performance techniques, musical literacy and music appreciation. Chorus 2 An intermediate continuation of Chorus 1 with an emphasis on developing advanced vocal techniques and musicianship skills through varied choral literature. The content will include advanced skills in vocal tone production, choral performance techniques, musical literacy, and music appreciation. Chorus 3 This course is an advanced continuation of Chorus 1 and 2. Students will study advanced vocal techniques and musicianship skills through the study of varied choral literature. The content will include advanced skills in vocal tone production, choral performance techniques, music literacy, and music appreciation. Q *AP Music Theory This course develops the student’s abilities to recognize and understand the tonal rythmic nature of any music that is heard or read in the score. The keyboard will aid in the teaching of Music Theory by providing a hands-on approach. The content will include the development of music theory skills, i.e., aural and notational skills, composition, harmonization and counterpoint. Students who sign up for AP Music Theory are required to take the first semester exam and the Advanced Placement examination. AP Music Theory includes district developed requirements designed to demonstrate student mastery of rigorous standards required of quality point fine arts courses. |
