History of St Petersburg
Grade Level 10-12 Length: 1 semester
Prerequisite None - 1/2 Credit

Students Did Al Capone really call St. Pete home? Did Babe Ruth really get chased by a gator at Crescent Lake? Is there really a Fountain of Youth downtown? Students explore the history of St. Petersburg from its early fishing village days to the wild Roaring Twenties to the arrival of Major League Baseball. Using the city’s past economic, political, civil strife and ethics history, students address problems of modern day St. Petersburg. Class includes an historic tour of St. Petersburg and Museum of History.

History of the 60’s
Grade Level: 11-12 Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: None - 1/2 credit

Hippies, love-ins, Vietnam war protests, Charles Manson, the Beatles, John Kennedy, civil rights, the counter-revolution...sign up for this class and see how the tie-dyed 60’s shaped America. This class is a hands on approach to psychedelic 1960’s era of American history. Students will investigate music, clothing styles, civil rights, women’s rights, movies - - from the decade that changed America forever!!

Introduction to Social Science
Grade Level: 10-12 Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: None - 1/2 Credit

This class uses a hands-on approach to studying current topics in psychology and the psychology research methods. Topics are geared toward student interest and have practical applications. Some examples are memory, perception, attention, problem-solving, learning theory, creativity, intelligence, gender roles, work and occupations, cultural psychology, and aggression theory. This course is recommended for students who wish to take AP Psychology or IB Psychology.

Law Studies
Grade Level: 9-12 Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: None - 1/2 Credit

Explore the intriguing world of crime and criminals. What motivates criminals to break the law? Learn the different categories of crime. Examine infamous criminals through video and lively class discussions. Could you solve the “perfect crime?” Find out what happens after arrest. Discover the steps in the criminal justice system. A great hands-on class for anyone interested in law enforcement. Students registered in Law Studies 1 participate in mock trials and are eligible to be part of St Petersburg High’s Student Court.

Law Studies 2
Grade Level: 9-12 Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: Law Studies 1 - 1/2 Credit

Using the knowledge,skills and experience from Law Studies 1, students now apply this knowledge to current court cases in the news. From O. J. Simpson to Terry Schiavo students are given an in-depth look into the prosecution and defense of famous cases. Students registered in Law Studies 2 participate in mock trials and are eligible to take a leadership role in St. Petersburg High’s Student Court.

Sociology
Grade Level: 11-12 Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: None - 1/2 Credit

Students enrolled in this class will learn about society and how it has developed over time. Themes discussed will be group interaction, cultures, countercultures, subcultures, deviant behavior, social aspects of sexuality, and social philosophy. Students will analyze where social behavior begins, how it changes over time and how society effects individualism.

Psychology 1
Grade Level: 11-12 Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: None - 1/2 Credit

Explore the fascinating world of the human mind and behavior through hands-on activities. Topics include sensation and perception where you will get in touch with your senses. Experience walking the halls of SPHS blindfolded. Learn what’s behind optical illusions and find out the truth about extra sensory perception. Discover the causes of mental disorders like schizophrenia, obsessive–compulsive behavior, and autism. Investigate the many different types of therapy used by psychologists. This course will help you better understand yourself and others.

Psychology 2
Grade Level: 11-12 Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: None - 1/2 Credit

Continue the journey into the human mind. Topics explored in Psychology 2 include personality theories. Learn to analyze your own personality using theories of Sigmund Freud and others. Once you have yourself figured out, move on to group behavior. Learn how and why people join cults and follow leaders. Other topics include conflict and motivation.

Q AP Psychology
Grade Level: 12 Length: 1 Year
Prerequisite: None - 1 Credit

The AP Psychology course is designed to introduce students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. tudents are exposed to the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. They also learn about ethics and methods psychologists use in their science and practice. The aim of the course is to provide students with a learning experience equivalent to that obtained in most college introductory psychology courses. Students are required to take the Advanced Placement exam.

Q AP Human Geography
Grade Level 10-12 Length: 1 year
Prerequisite: none - 1 Credit

The purpose of this course is to prepare students to understand the discipline of geography, including its tools, themes, and concepts; think critically about geographic problems on a global, national, and local scale; appreciate global cultures and their economic characteristics; and understand how cultural landscapes are created and how they change over time. Required to take the AP Examination.

Q AP US History
Grade Level: 11 Length: 1 Year
Prerequisite: World History - 1 Credit

A comprehensive knowledge of the American character will be acquired through the analysis of geopolitical, socioeconomic and cultural knowledge. Study will focus on persistent themes and change in American History. Students will demonstrate understanding of historical method, inquiry processes, reasoning, and interpretation. Students are required to take the Advanced Placement examination and the first semester exam in this class.
